Which Recovery Tool Do You Need?
The biggest mistake new buyers make is grabbing the wrong tool for the recovery they're trying to do. Here's the cheat sheet.
Kinetic Recovery Rope
A dynamic rope that stretches up to 33% under load, storing energy and yanking a stuck vehicle free with a smooth pull. Use when the stuck rig is buried in sand, mud, or snow. NOT a tow strap.
Tow Strap
A static strap (no stretch) for towing a disabled vehicle behind another vehicle. Strong but not designed for snatch recovery - using a tow strap to snatch a stuck vehicle can break it dangerously.
Synthetic Winch Line
Replaces the steel cable on your winch drum. Major safety upgrade - synthetic line won't whip if it breaks under load, it just falls to the ground. Steel cable recoil has killed people.
Soft Shackles
Synthetic loops that replace steel D-rings. Stronger pound-for-pound, lighter, float in water, and won't damage your winch hooks or painted bumpers if they whip around in a recovery.
Tree Saver Strap
When you're winching off a tree, this wide nylon strap protects the bark from being girdled by your winch cable. Required gear on Forest Service and BLM land - and good etiquette anywhere.
Receiver Shackle
Slides into your 2" hitch receiver and gives you a proper recovery attachment point. Never pull recovery off your hitch ball - it's not designed for snatch loads and can break with serious consequences.
